Lyon: What Passes for a Preview

By: Martha | September 12th, 2008

Don’t make me call your mother, punk.

Gardiens: Letizi, Ospina
Défenseurs: Cid, Diakité, Gace, Hognon, Kanté, Rool
Milieux: Coulibaly, Echouafni, Faé, Hellebuyck
Attaquants: Bamogo, Ben Saada, Modeste, Mouloungui, Rémy

Absents: Apam, Moreau, Traoré (blessés), Jeunechamp (suspendu), Asamoah, Barul, Moussilou, Ozokwo (choix de l’entraîneur)

Read ‘em and weep, kids: No Apam. Yikes. I realize the team were without him for the first three matches this season and coped fairly well, but this is Lyon, Yahia is gone, and last time we saw Hognon on the pitch he was clearly not healthy. I repeat: YIKES.

Traoré, too, is out, but at least he and Ben Saada time their injuries considerately, and so far have managed not to be broken at the same time. Dare we be optimistic and see tomorrow as Ben Saada’s big breakout game for Nice? No, you’re right — optimism is never a good idea.

Anyway, best guess at as starting XI:

Letizi
Diakité-Hognon-Kanté-Rool
Echouafni
Fae-Hellebuyck
Bamogo-Ben Saada
Remy

I suppose we could see Coulibaly for Ben Saada, but I hope not. Ben Saada’s been cursed so far and hasn’t managed to make it through a full match without breaking, but his vision is fantastic, and he’s never going to turn into Nice’s mythical new #10 without being given the chance to work his magic in big matches.

Lyon have been flat for the past couple rounds, and are without Grosso and Clerc. Hey, every little bit helps, right? On the other hand, of course, one Hugo Lloris hasn’t give up a goal yet this season, which is an astonishing statistic no matter who they’re playing. (Check over at the Lyon blog for a detailed preview later today, I’m sure Inara and John will hook us up with all the scary info we need.)

Nice got two points from Lyon last season in two scoreless draws, playing without Ederson in the home leg because he Belonged to Them already and wasn’t allowed to kick their asses one last time. That fact, combined with Lyon’s recent form, the importance of this match for Nice — facing their friends and former teammates for the first time, and the mind-boggling possibility of moving into first with a win — and Rémy’s desperate desire to show Lyon what he’s worth makes it hard to be entirely pessimistic going into the match.

Emerse Fae thinks it’ll be 2-1 to Nice. Me? I’ll pray for a miracle win but will weep with joy at a draw.

oh my lord. I can’t believe he called a penalty. Is he trying to give this game away? That is so unfair.

Benzema’s going to take it. It was Faé, by the way, who gave it away. A red card for…….Rool…

They’re saying it was a handball? I didn’t see it. And of course Benzema makes it. That is so unfair.

Yeah, there was nothing. All I’m saying is that if that call had gone against anyone Inter or Juve was playing at home and they won it on a gift PK, everyone would be going apeshit about a fix.

I hope the French refs don’t have the same mentality as the Italian ones. But of course this happens.

Letizi looks like he might cry…his eyes are really red but he’s still smiling.

Yeah, it happens, people miss calls, it’s just awfully good timing for Lyon.

HAHHAHA! That’s not Antonetti having a go, that’s Maurice Cohen, the Nice president. AWESOME.

It’s really unfortunate about the last minute penalty. Was it really a handball? I didn’t get to see the match at all so I have no idea.

From what I could tell on my shitty stream, Inara, the most that happened is that is nicked his arm, but his arm was in on his body — it didn’t affect the flight of the ball at all and was ball-to-arm, if it touched him (which is hard to tell).

It’s a shitty feeling to win or lose that way, imho — Inter came back from 0-2 down against Parma to win 3-2 in injury time sort of like that (but even more questionably) last season, and I felt sick with guilt for 24 hours.

Looking through the forums, the Nice supporters are unhappy about the calls on all three goals, but I supposes that’s natural. The Rool foul that let to one of the FKs looked legit to me, I can’t remember the other — will have to wait to download.

Juni’s goals looked pretty legit, even the second one. But it’s just the last penalty, giving the circumstance of that time.

If you want me to go back on my recording and get a gif of the handball I’ll be glad to do so.

LOL, THAT’S THE PRES? I couldn’t tell. I thought Antonetti would look something like Ancelotti, thus the assumption.

(Martha, I was just looking at the ESPN report:

The referee awarded the goal although the linesman raised his flag indicating Lyon striker Frederic Piquionne was offside.

That was the second goal where I thought SIDNEY kicked it when he was offside. I guess from attributing the goal to Juni that Piquionne didn’t actually make contact with the ball.)

I don’t think they’re upset about the goals counting, they don’t think the free kicks should have been given. Though if Piquionne was involved in the play and offside, even if he didn’t touch it, shouldn’t the goal be ruled out? If he’s making a run for the ball, it’s going to affect Letizi ….

Thanks for the offer! Lemme download it and watch it again and look around for clips, if I can’t find anything I’ll definitely come bug you. (:

Antonetti’s much rounder and more awesome than Cohen, but that was definitely a fantastic moment. Man alive — imagine Moratti pulling that.
