Weekend Reading Material

This picture is unrelated to anything.

•The only eye-witness report of last night’s match that I can find is here. It doesn’t sound like it was as big of a debacle as the scoreline suggests, but it’s hard for me to tell because Google translate really wrecks havoc with the story. In good news, Remy reportedly played really well. As for the rest, fatigue, as can be expected, was a problem, but so were individual errors in front of goal, which is worrying. (One hopes, I guess, that they were a function of fatigue, and won’t become habit. Maybe.) Also worrying is the fact that Letizi picked up a knock during his 45 minutes of action; he’ll be reexamined today.

•If his short interview with L’Equipe can be believed, Baky’s in a great mood, and is happy to return to training on Monday. He still wants to go to OM and makes no secret of it, but it doesn’t look like he plans to do any (more) pouting, which is nice to hear.

•And Antonetti will be happy to have Baky back — he’s going to welcome him “as a father welcomes his son … Even if, sometimes, there are tensions family.” That said, he understands Baky wanting to leave, and doesn’t sound like he has any interested in standing in his way: “Our policy is clear. The players remain in Nice two or three years. It is a springboard. You can not then tell them to stay.” Man. Like I said in the comments on yesterday’s post, I like Antonetti, and how matter-of-fact he usually is — no one’s going to get him to talk about wild goals, or to praise a new player (Remy, for example) as the savior. The team is what it is, and everyone has work to do.

•There’s only a short excerpt from the interview Remy did with France Football online, but what’s there is encouraging, if he’s really as modest as willing to work as his words suggest.

•Chaouki Ben Saada also gave a frank interview this week, talking about his weaknesses, and his commitment to improving his game. I don’t know much about this guy, but everything I hear makes me respect him more as a person — you’ve got to be pretty special to not only follow your childhood team down to Ligue 2, but also sign a new contract with them when you know you’re leaving, just to make sure they get value for you when you’re sold. Talking like he does in the interview only reinforces that good impression.

Good weekend, everyone — assuming nothing earth-shattering happens tomorrow, I’ll see you on Monday.

How is Antonetti as a manager? Can he lead bigger French clubs to success.

If you want to know more about ben Saada, you should definitly check out rami’s Tunisia WCB. Or ask rami himself, I’m sure he’ll give you the whole nine about that guy.

Yeah, Rami’s blog is basically where I’ve learned everything I know — I went and read up when he arrived, but I need to see him play. I’ll go dig around for links over there, thanks Magnusson.

Aditya, I don’t know. He’s had success with limited resources at three small clubs now and, depending on how the next few years go at Nice, we could be getting to the point where bigger teams will come calling. As I said, I like him, so I’d love to see him get that chance.

Nice Matin can be counted on to always put a positive spin on les Aiglons’ performances (unless they are in the midst of a campaign to get the manager/president fired), but that story rings true (at least in French).

A positive start, a few missed chances, a few lapses in concentration to allow the UNFP back into the match, and then the kids getting over-run by the old pros in the last 15 minutes. The scoreline definitely flattered them. Keep in mind that the UNFP side is made up of out of contract professionals who are desperately trying to get at least one more shot at the big time; they have rather more to play for than the Nicois.

Personally, I very much think Kone should stay for at last one more year, but the club needs to have that situation resolved so they can move on.

I only get it weekly (Thurs edition, I think), but there’s an article about Remy in the one I just got — maybe you can find that one?

The next Nice friendly is schedule for the 15th, @ Fréjus. When do Bordeaux play next?

France Football have seriously upgraded their website recently, and you should each keep an eye on your respective club’s pages. The latest they have on OGCN is that OL are now denying any interest in Kone and have pledged themselves to Govou (Domenech must have gotten to them, too), while the Girondins piece is on Gourcuff being thrilled to be someplace where he will actually play (btw, both he and Gouffran impressed l’Equipe in Bordeaux’s 2-1 win over Ajaccio Friday night).

Helas, I forgot to answer the query about Bordeaux’s next friendly; it’s on the 16th against Châteauroux of Ligue 2 in Barbezieux (in the Charente, and yes, I did have to look it up). Things get a bit more serious after that, with them facing OM, Toulouse and Rennes before the “Trophee des Champions” against OL on 2 August.

L’Equipe has a very handy one page summary of all of the Ligue 1 clubs pre-season schedules here:http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/L1_20082009_reprise.html

To Aditya, Antonetti is a GREAT coach but there’s this stigma about certain coaches. For example, a few coaches can only coach southern clubs but he broke the mold. He could have been Bastia’s Guy Roux but he left.
I love the guy but he’s not the favorite in the press and in this civilization, that’s all that counts. Ho could win things but he would need a challenge with a small team that suddenly gets loads of money, i.e. Grenoble.
That would help his profile. Or maybe he can get Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux or some other southern club (I’m definitly thinking Monaco) to hire him and let him have success.

Yep, it’s on the the 16th. I can’t wait for them to play OM, but of course the biggest event this summer will be the Trophée des Champions match against OL (which is actually on the 9th of August).

Sorry, Jennifer, but if you wait until the 9th for the Trophee, you’ll be watching a replay.

Thanks a lot for your input, Magnusson. The regional thing is interesting to me because in Italy (the league I know best), there are horrible regional prejudices, and yet I’ve never noticed them affecting where coaches can coach — if you win, people at least keep their mouths shut about where you’re from (until the losing starts).

Kone was back in training today: http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2008/20080714_151102_b-kone-a-l-entrainement_Dev.html.

L’Equipe reports that the difference between OGCN and OM is financial, with the Aiglons wanting 9 million euro and 15% of the fee from any future sale, and OM offering 8.5 million and an extra 1 million to cover the two years of contract he has remaining.

It’s a canny move by OGCN, as his next transfer could be for a huge fee, but my gut tells me that they will find common ground and that Baky will be playing in ciel et blanc come August.

Thanks, Ursus, threw a post up about that this morning! And the financial details actually came out last week, but Cohen is already backing off his 15 July “deadline” as stated then, so it does seem likely Baky be on his way sooner than later.
